Reza Pahlavi, Crown Prince of Iran, presently living in the United States, also sent me a very nice personal letter after he read Kitab Kabbani. We were planning to meet in Fresno, California near where I live, but his travel came when I was out of the Country, serving a mission for our Church in Mexico. Recently he was in Fresno again and invited me to dinner and we had a conversation about Iran and present-day security issues in the Middle East.
Also from the international arena I received this thoughtful letter from Mr. Yoko Konishi in Japan:
I enjoyed my winter vacation reading Conversations Among Butterflies. Once I started reading, I would keep reading for a coupe of hours. [I will leave out his discussion of what happens to the characters so as not to spoil it for those who want to read this book.] The most memorable line was that there are two kind of people in the world. It has been on my mind ever since I read it. The word invisible also left an impression on me. At the end of the story Louie says that trying again is what life is all about and that mistake have already been made. Her words are really encouraging. That's my favorite part.

It was amazing
Loved the book, great insight to a wonderful butterfly, and the inner strengths of others. Not an easy read but worth the effort.

This review is a bit more formal than what I've written about other books. (My other reviews are more like journal entries.) Most of this is actually what I posted on Amazon.
Some time ago, I spent a couple of years in Latin America. Looking back my mind and heart are filled with fond memories. Latin America has so many stories to tell.
Conversations Among Butterflies vividly captures many of these stories. The story is metaphorically interlaced with the peace of a meadow glistening under morning dew and the disorder and destruction of a river bursting from its restraints, taking the lives and livelihoods of innocent in its path. A reality many in Latin America live today.
The characters are central to the book. Each one is a narrator of their story. Rather than relying on common tropes, the protagonists are unique, relatable and grow throughout the story. The antagonists are not flat, but rather compelling and—although unjustified—understandable. That being said, dividing the cast between protagonists and antagonists is probably unfair.
The book not only skillfully navigates the political climate of a military junta, but sheds light on the dynamics of military rule. It does a good job at answering the whys and hows. But, perhaps more importantly, it puts a human face on those who have suffered from the glory of their political superiors and the vengeance of revolutionaries.
I've found myself thinking of this book as I read certain news articles and historical accounts about Latin America and the world. The book has personal implications too. How do I justify my actions? Are my justifications just convenience, anger, pride or, maybe, fear?
All those thoughts aside, it's a thrilling story. There are twists and turns, failures and successes, mysteries and romance. That being said, I'm not sure I want my honeymoon to be as eventful as this one was! It sure was a pleasure to read though.

I loved this book! I loved how the characters were built. I love books that pull you in emotionally with each character and you feel you can relate. I liked how he made each character deep. Everyone had a story, and everyone truly does, everyone around you. You never know what someone has gone through! What powerful story! I don't want to give spoiler alerts, so overall, I recommend this book for those who love to think! It brought a lot of great discussion and deep thoughts! Enjoy!

Mike Mitchell crafts an excellent story of two American tourists hunting for butterflies in a small Central American nation when they are swept up in a revolution. The characters are realistic and the story could be taken from a modern-day headline. The clash of cultures, political philosophies, and military duty make for an interesting read. The story may not turn out like you expect as the people involved often show hidden strengths and beliefs that guide them through the dangers of the crisis that engulfs their lives.

I was hooked from the second page! He does a great job at developing characters and bring you into the story without being cheesy. As a busy college student, I love reading this as a break from my studies, because it was a comfortable read but it kept my mind engaged! Its a meaningful way to spend my time. My wife also loved the book. We are definitely fans of Mike Mitchell and are going to read his book Chinese Circus next! I am very happy with this purchase! I would recommend it to anyone who wants an interesting, well written, intriguing novel to read.

I don’t like giving ratings to books (what does "4/5 stars" really mean anyway?), but this is Amazon.
Te lo recomiendo.

I really enjoyed the story and the topic, middle eastern history slowed me down, but in the end I can see how it was needed. I definitely wonder what will happen to Thad next . I do want to read more. Come on Mike Mitchell get going writing the next one.

Quoting from the book:
“I don’t have answers for your questions,” Leyla said. “Sometimes things are just what they are. Who are we to say we know more than the combined wisdom of our ancestors? Who are we to think we have new answers to the same old questions?"
“Who are we not to consider these questions? I agree we need to respect the wisdom of the past and the doctrine of the present, but we are the intersection to the future. If we don’t do our best—which might mean completing the story, we are cheating those who come after us.”
As the chase after the mysterious "Kabbani Book" escalates, our hero is compelled to find the answers to some difficult questions posed by personal quagmires and the weight of history. In Kitab Kabbani, Mike Mitchell tells a thrilling—and extensively researched—story with the naturally beautiful and culturally intriguing Middle East as his backdrop.
While the book is filled with many meaningful scenes and interesting places, there is one scene which towers above the others. It’s still clear in my mind, almost as if it were my own memory. Between an ocean of stars and a sea of sand the descriptions and dialog create a brilliant moment. I'm glad I spent the time to read this book.
